Evidence for working practices

1. Toolmarks

Process
Fine shaping
Tool
Roundel
Method
Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Gentle
Description
The roundel has been used on the branches and leaves. In this case this detailed texture must have been applied before carving in the round took place since these branches would have been too fragile after this.

2. Toolmarks

Process
Detailing
Tool
Drill
Method
Vertical (90°)
Description
Marks of the drill can be seen on the leaves and the drill must have been used to undercut these branches.

3. Toolmarks

Process
Flattening
Tool
Scraper
Method
Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Medium
Description
Scraper marks are visible behind the leaves on the background.

Notes

The branches and some of the leaves on this tree are carved in the round. This is incredibly delicate work which is almost completely invisible at the height that it is on the Column. Again, this example shows that there is no direct connection between visibility and the level of detail of the carving on the Column.
