Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The block line in the middle of the image runs straight through the shoulder of one of these figures and the part of his body which crossed this joint has since broken off. The fact that no attempt is made in the carving to avoid detailed carving crossing this joint shows that all of this work was undertaken in place.

Notes

The heads in the background in this image are clearly more roughly finished than the figures in the foreground. Originally, of course, they would have been obscured from view somewhat by the heads of the foreground figures which are now broken off.
