Description
In the middle of this image a pair of notches has been cut into the spiral border. These notches are found in several areas of the Column and their function is unclear. One possibility is that they provide a guide for the carvers to the depth to which the relief should be carved. Here they are left because they happen to be located in an area which was carved as part of the border and not the figured scene.
