The joint between drums crosses the centre of this image and at the right end the head of one soldier crosses it. This work must have been completed in place.

2. Clamp socket

The restoration to the left of this image fills a hole made by the removal of a metal clamp in the post-Roman period. This clamp originally held the drums in place.
