Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The fact that the carving of the figures passes without interruption across the joint between blocks suggests that this work was done in place.

2. Clamp socket

Process
Securing
Description
The clamp hole between blocks at the top of this image shows that metal fixtures were originally used to hold the blocks of the arch in place. Holes made by the later removal of these clamps can be seen elsewhere in this image.
