Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The fact that so much of the detail crosses the joint between blocks without difficulty shows that this carving was done in place.

Notes

The hole for the window was probably carved before the drums were put in place, when the internal staircase was also carved out, with only the frame being finished one everything has been erected. This slide also illustrates the proportional discontinuity between figures and animals on the Column. The animals and waggons in the background are significantly smaller than the soldiers surrounding them.
