The way in which the block division here crosses through the back of the central figure's head suggests that this carving must have been done in place since lining up carving that had been finished separately would have been difficult. It might have been possible to roughly work the figures before putting them up, finishing them in place, but generally it would have been easier simply to carry out all the work once they were erected. However, this particular head was restored by Carradori in the late eighteenth century and its exact relationship to the edge of the block on which it is carved is unclear.
