A channelling tool or flat chisel was used to outline the figures in this detail.

Notes

The depth of the relief on the Column of Marcus Aurelius can be seen in this detail. The cluster of children stand right out from the background and are carefully outlined, with the figures in the foreground carved almost in the round.
