The carving extends across the block division, suggesting that carving was completed after the drums had been put in place. The slight mismatching of the figures is due to the earthquake damage which twisted some of the drums.
The group of children at the centre of this image are all carefully outlined using a channelling tool or flat chisel, something which is characteristic of the Column of Marcus Aurelius generally.
