Description
In this detail the soldier standing to the left has been carved so that his foot rests just on the division between two drums. Elsewhere on the Column of Trajan small details cross the joints between drums without interruption, showing that all of this work was carved only once the Column had been erected.

Notes

Apparent in this image is the way in which the frieze never responds to the windows. These are part of the architectural arrangement of the Column and the frieze ignores them altogether. The level of detail achieved in the carving can be seen in the individually modelled fingernails of the soldier in the bottom right; this could never have been visible but demonstrates the carvers' desire to represents their subjects as accurately as possible.
