Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
In this damaged state the lines of the various blocks employed are especially clear and, in particular, the lack of any connection between different elements of the monuments and these blocks. In the centre left of this image, for instance, a block can be seen into which was carved a section of the half-column, two surfaces on the right at different depths, as well as a section of entablature over the archway.

2. Pin socket

Process
Restoration
Description
Also on this block various sections of stone pinned back on during restoration can be seen.

Notes

This image shows the damaged surface of the northern end of the eastern facade prior to the most recent campaign of restoration.
