The rough working of a surface to provide a flat finish rather than a smooth one. Ashlar blocks in rough walls might be flattened on all sides without being smoothed, and often the bottom of relief panels which would have been hidden from view are simply flattened off. This could be achieved using a tooth chisel or flat chisel.
