Notes

This is another example of the motif of a soldier handing a basket of earth to a colleague which is found several times on the Column. The individually carved fingernails on the hand of the righthand soldier reveal the level of detail invested in these scenes. The fact that this level of finish is found all along the frieze suggests that a decision had been made about what to include and what not to.
