Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The slightly awkward solution found to handling the joint between the entablature of the archway and the half-column can be seen here. The upper lines of moulding on the entablature actually overlap the column partially and are merged into the fluting. This made it difficult to carve the detailed work on the moulding in this section, perhaps indicating that this solution was only worked out once everything had been put up and the carvers were finishing off the details.
