The marks of a flat chisel used to outline the lefthand Dacian can be seen above his head.

On this tree, as on most of the other trees, the texture was achieved by carving along the form using either a round-headed or flat chisel. Rarely was the form defined by carving across it as was the preferred technique in the Renaissance and later.
