Notes

This detail of the edge of the abacus of a Corinthian capital shows two distinct phases of work with the drill and channelling tool. On the right a row of holes have been drilled along the space between two fronds; further drill holes are apparent at the top of these fronds. On the left these holes have been carved together using a flat chisel or some form of channelling tool. The slight swellings in this channel are the traces of the holes which were originally drilled down this line. Presumably the second stage of work was never completed on the right because this section would not have been visible or because work was interrupted for some reason.
