Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The block line passes through the head of a body showing that this detail must have been carved in place. The fact that this head crosses into the spiral border suggests that this element was carved at the same time as the rest of the decoration, even if it was laid out beforehand.

2. Toolmarks

Process
Detailing
Tool
Drill
Method
Vertical (90°)
Description
Drill holes are visible in the hair of the body to the left and on the chain mail of the soldier in the centre.

3. Clamp

Process
Restoration
Description
The hole in the surface here is from the removal of a metal clamp in a later period. A division between two drums can be seen running across the middle of the image and this clamp was intended to hold these elements in place.
