Evidence for working practices

1. Toolmarks

Process
Detailing
Tool
Drill
Method
Vertical (90°)
Description
The drill was used on chainmail to give it texture; in other words, it was deliberately to create small holes rather than simply as a tool to achieve depth in conjunction with other tools.

2. Toolmarks

Process
Outlining
Tool
Channelling Tool
Method
Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Gentle
Description
A channelling tool of some sort was used to outline the oxen, in particular to mark out their legs from the background.

Notes

The window frame, to judge from this detail, appears to have been carved at the same time as the relief. In this case, the heads of the oxen are arranged to avoid this frame but in places overlap it. It seem likely that the hole for the window, however, was carved very early on, probably before any carving of the relief took place.
