Evidence for working practices

Method
Angle: Vertical (90°)
Force: Gentle
Description
Point chisel work can be seen on the base on which all these figures stand, an area which would not have been visible from the ground.

2. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
A block line runs horizontally through the middle of this scene just above the line of the heads of the crowd in the foreground. A vertical block joint can be seen between the fifth and sixth figures from the left in the front row and it looks very much like a space is deliberately left for this, again indicating that the carvers were not comfortable carving across the joins between blocks.
