Description
Visible in this image is a small notch in the border to the right of the emperor. Several of these notches are visible on the Column (on PR205_1_06_09, for instance) and Peter Rockwell has proposed that they are markers left by the figure carvers to indicate to the background carvers the depth to which they should carve the background.

Notes

This is one of the most carefully arranged of the set piece scenes on the Column. It is also one of the places where the action on the two neighbouring spirals comes closest together. The border in this region is simply the stone remaining between the two scenes and appears to have been carved only after the figures on both spirals had been laid out.
