Description
The flat chisel was used to even out the background and can clearly be seen here following the outline of the figure's leg and foot.

Notes

It is clear in this detail that the border between spirals did not run along a clearly marked and planned line. Here the border jumps up as it carved either side of a window. This reflects the generally flexible approach taken by the carvers who seem to have been working with very rough measurements.
