Legs of Roman soldiers.
The background on which these soldiers stand is slightly awkwardly composed here. The figure to the right of the middle is provided with a small projection of land to support his rear foot while the figure to his left stands on a lower plane. This is one detail which suggests that the figures were carved before any work on the background began and sometimes the background carvers were left with problems like this which they had to provide solutions for.
