Notes

To give this detailed scene of Dacian families greeting the emperor as much space as possible the carvers responsible pushed the spiral border as far down on top of the scene beneath as they could. This is an area of the Column where the carvers appear to have been concerned about how much space they had at their disposal and were compressing the action as much as possible, all of which indicates that there was not a scaled drawing or model of the frieze from which they were working.
