Notes

The separation between areas of figurative carving and background carving is slightly awkward in this detail. The area of rocky landscape in front of the two cavalrymen in this scene is carefully outlined and roughly textured but the way in which the horses disappear behind it is slightly muddled. Here, and elsewhere, one gets the impression that the figures were carved first with spaces between them left for later background carving and occasionally the relationship between these two elements was misconceived. The soldiers on the right were meant to have holes drilled in their hands for the insertion of metal weapons but there were never added.
