Evidence for working practices

1. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The carving runs across the block joint, demonstrating that the carving was most likely accomplished in place.

2. Clamp

Process
Securing
Description
The hole on the left hand side of the image was made sometime in the post-Roman period, when the metal clamps used to secure the monument were removed and melted down for reuse.

Notes

The adlocutio scene represents an early moment at the start of the second war against the Dacians. The damage at the bottom of this image has been caused by later cutting to remove a metal clamp. The hole made by this activity has since been filled with a cement.
