The block division running down through the figure of Augustus is evident in this image. Augustus is arguably the single most important figure on this monument and it is inconceivable that the relief would have been arranged so that he straddled two blocks if carving took place before the blocks were put in place. This is just one other indication, then, that all carving was carried out on scaffolding once the structure had been put up.
Across most of the surface of the Ara Pacis the rasp is used to smooth the surface of the clothing of the figures.
Notes
In terms of toolmarks, the rasp is used across most of the surface of the stone for smoothing. No attempt was made to polish the surface which is the case with the majority of Roman monuments. There is also no trace of paint on this monument.
