The rough marks of a point chisel can be seen on the rear side of the block behind this panel in the top right corner. These are the remains of the original roughly squared surface of the block into which these scenes were carved.
The measuring point on the lower abdomen of the emperor must have been marked out early in the carving process to serve as a reference point throughout. Why is was left is not clear but perhaps this relief was rushed into place.
