Large and Small Satyr and Dionysos groups from the Sculptor's Workshop.
These two statues from the Sculptor's Workshop are evidently both based on the same type. They are often also used as illustrations of Roman carvers' ability to 'copy' well-known types precisely. Considering this it is interesting to note that no measuring points were found on these pieces and that there are certain differences between them which suggest that they are not accurate replicas made using some mechanical system like the pointing machine. The twist of the torso and the modelling of the abdomen, in particular, is different. Another version of the same type was found on the Esquiline in Rome and is now in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek in Copenhagen. It is signed by an Aphrodisian.
