Roughing-out
Tool
Point
Method
Angle: Vertical (90°)
Force: Medium
Description
The area around the garland on the left, including the background, has been roughed-out with the point chisel. This was finer work than the initial squaring seen on the surface of the garland.

3. Toolmarks

Process
Fine shaping
Tool
Flat Chisel
Method
Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Medium
Description
The garland and boss on the right have been carved several stages further, their final surface having been carved with the flat chisel.

4. Clamp socket

Process
Securing
Description
A clamp hole above the righthand boss shows that the lid of this sarcophagus was secured to the chest, indicating that it was used.

Notes

The two ends of this sarcophagus were worked in slightly different ways. While this end was first squared roughly with a point chisel before further roughing-out was undertaken, on the other end the surface was originally sawn (see PR305_02_07).
