The edges of some of these blocks and the socle at the bottom are worked with the flat chisel, presumably to ensure that the joins between them were flush.
Four lifting bosses, used for securing ropes around these blocks during lifting, are visible in this image. These would eventually have been removed during the smoothing of these surfaces, a stage of work which was never completed here.
