Strips of tooth chiselling are visible running down this shaft, alternating with finer flat chiselling. These flat strips mean that the shaft is actually facetted rather than rounded.
Between the lines of tooth chiselling are lines of flat chiselling. These are the section of the shaft which will be carved into the fillet between the flutes.
Lines of point chiselling can be seen on the top portion of this shaft which define the middle of each flute. These lines seem to have been carved when work started on shaping the flutes properly.
