Evidence for working practices

1. Toolmarks

Process
Roughing-out
Tool
Point
Method
Angle: Vertical (90°)
Force: Gentle
Description
The surface on the left side of this pier has been left roughed-out with the point chisel, ready for detailed carving that never took place. The border, in contrast, has been more finely worked, but still not as ornamental as on the south and west side of the pier.

2. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
The detailed carving on the right of the pier crosses between blocks without interruption and must have been carved in place. The block lines also show that a number of differently sized blocks were used for this pier. It seems likely, then, that the blocks were put in place in the condition found on the left side of this pier.
