The clamp hole on the top of this side shows that a lid was fixed onto this chest, indicating that it was used for a burial.

Notes

The difference in finish between the medallion and the garland is a feature of other sarcophagi at Aphrodisias (see PR305_02_13) and might indicate the division of labour between specialist carvers.
