Evidence for working practices

1. Toolmarks

Process
Squaring
Tool
Point
Method
Angle: Steep (60-70°)
Force: Medium
Description
The rough surfaces of these blocks have been worked with the point chisel.

2. Block joint

Process
Placement
Description
To judge from the way that the direction of point chiselling changes between blocks while the flatter surfaces cuts across several different ones, these blocks were put in place in roughly squared condition before the section where the column base was to be placed was flattened down.

3. Toolmarks

Process
Flattening
Tool
Tooth Chisel
Method
Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Medium
Description
The flat surface beneath the column and base is tooth chiselled. This was probably the surface down to which all of the top surface was meant to have been carved but for some reason never was.

4. Toolmarks

Process
Rough shaping
Tool
Tooth Chisel
Method
Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Medium
Description
The lower surface of the column shaft is tooth chiselled. This was probably done before the column was erected in the building.
