The drill has been used around the top of the statuette to break off excess stone and define the edge of the figure. This is a quite unusual use of this tool.
Several areas of the statuette have already been smoothed with either the rasp or very coarse abrasives, showing that the carver was moving between stages of work relatively fluidly.
