Description
Rough point chisel work is visible on the bottom of the masks which seem to be unfinished on this block. The carver seems to have been working from the top of the mask down, since the hair is modelled while the bottom of the mask is not.

Notes

On this block of this mask and garland frieze there is a clear difference in finish between the masks and garlands, which is a feature noticeable elsewhere on these blocks. This might suggest a division of labour between specialist garland and figure carvers. There is also a marked difference in technique and quality between blocks, suggesting that a range of carvers were involved in this major municipal project.
