Description
The different sizes of blocks used in this pier and the fact that the decoration crosses between them without interruption suggests that this carving was done in place.

Notes

The irregular sizes and generally small dimensions of the blocks used in this pier are typical of major architectural projects at Aphrodisias. Acquiring large blocks of white marble from the local quarries seems to have been difficult and most of the columns on site are constructed out of drums, with the exception of the grey marble column shafts of the Tetrastoon adjacent to the Theatre Baths.
