Description
The male figure on this lid has been left with a roughed-out head.

Notes

The portrait of this figure has not been finished. This is common on portrait busts on chests at Aphrodisias but kline lids are quite rare here. Why this portrait was never finished is unclear. One option is that it was supposed to be done after the individual died but never was; another option is that whoever was buried in this sarcophagus simply acquired a lid in this form and never bothered to have a portrait added; finally this might even be a deliberate statement reflecting a reluctance to depict the deceased.
