The roughed-out form of Hermes' caduceus can be seen here. This detailed form was clearly blocked-out as a rectangular block before any further carving was undertaken on it.
The first stage of shaping on the caduceus appears to have been done quite roughly with a round-headed chisel, to judge from the toolmarks at its lower end.
