Description
The hole in the middle of flat surface at the end of the shoulder was made for a metal pin to hold the arm, carved from a separate piece of stone, in place.

2. - Clamp socket

Process
Securing
Description
A clamp was also fixed across the join between the two blocks to secure them together. The hole at the upper end of this clamp was cut deeply to join the pin socket and was probably used for pouring the molten metal into.

Notes

This statue was carved for at least six pieces of stone. Both the arms were carved separately and pinned in place, as were sections of the helmet and the cloak, and the portrait head. This technique of piecing was common in the Hellenistic period and the early Roman Imperial period but becomes rarer after the mid 1st century AD.
