The way in which the leaves are handled on this pier is very similarly to the way we see carvers making leaves on the Column of Trajan. The drill and channelling tool are used to define the edges of the leaf and provide some depth around it while a round-headed chisel is used on the surface of the leaf to provide texture and model the veins of the leaf.
