Method
Vertical (90°)
Description
Heavy drill use to achieve a striking pattern of light and dark is visible on this section of decoration. The drill must have been used in the foliage and around the animal above, as well as in the moulding running around this scene.

Channelling Tool
Method
Angle: Shallow (40-50°)
Force: Gentle
Description
A channelling tool has been used following drilling to carve away the drill holes and create the deep grooves around and between the key details of the scene.

Notes

The decorated border on this pier is slightly different on its two decorated faces (the west and the south), indicating perhaps that two or more carvers were working on it at the same time and interpreting the instructions for it, presumably a sketch, differently.
