Particular attention has been paid to modelling the feet of this figure, with his left foot slightly overlapping the edge of the frieze, a deliberate detail intended to give the subject a lifelike quality. Peter Rockwell notes that, when at art school, he was taught that when carving relief figures to go high on a monument it was good idea to carve their foot projecting slightly to provide the viewer with a reference point that would allow them to appreciate the full height of the figure.
