Description
The base of this relief has been left rough while the rest of the surface - including on the feet - is carefully carved. This area would probably not have been visible from the ground.

Notes

Particular attention has been paid to modelling the feet of this figure, with his left foot slightly overlapping the edge of the frieze, a deliberate detail intended to give the subject a lifelike quality. Peter Rockwell notes that, when at art school, he was taught that when carving relief figures to go high on a monument it was good idea to carve their foot projecting slightly to provide the viewer with a reference point that would allow them to appreciate the full height of the figure.
