The lower surfaces of the blocks in the side wall have been roughly squared with the point chisel but not worked any further. This section of the wall would have been hidden from view when the steps that have since been removed abutted it.
The fact that the point chiselling is differently orientated on each block indicates that this was done before they were put in place, while the smoother chiselling above this, which corresponds to the top edges of the steps, crosses the joints between blocks and appears to have been done in place
The slightly inset flat strip which correspond to the edge of the steps which originally abutted this wall is tooth chiselled. This strip was presumably flattened to ensure a close join between the stair blocks and this wall.
