Rough point chiselling can be seen on the left side of this bust, where it was in the process of being re-carved, and on the arm at the bottom, which was being added to the composition.

A possible measuring point can be seen on the chest of this figure which might well have been used by the sculptor to ensure that the proportions of the finished figure were correct.

Rough flat chiselling can be seen between the finished surface of the original carving on the right and the area of re-carving on the left.

Notes

This portrait was found in the Sculptor's Workshop and consists of a finished bust of a philosopher (or other bearded individual) which was in the process of being re-carved. Although re-carved portraits are relatively common this is one of the few unfinished examples.
