Notes

The Bacakale Quarry is the largest quarry at Iscehisar (ancient Dokimeion) and the focus of modern activity at the site. Both white and coloured marble are extracted here, the latter a white-cream breccia with purple veins (pavonazzetto). This image shows modern quarrying at the bottom of an ancient quarrying face. The difference in colour on the quarry-face shows where ancient debris has been removed to allow the modern quarrymen access to the rock. The blocks are both ancient and modern.
