Rough flat chisel work on the bottom of the scene is still visible, though it would not have been originally; this seems to have been simply to roughly flatten off this surface.
The series of block lines visible here show that the large block on which the alimenta scene rests steps up in the bottom righthand corner. Here we can see how the horizontal block line visible on the left does not continue all the way across, so we are looking at two blocks. This shows just how much work was put into combining differently shaped blocks on this monument. All of this shows that carving was done in place.
