Description
Fluting had to be finished once the blocks were in place on the monument to ensure both that the flutes were vertical and that they crossed the block lines properly. When the American School of Classical Studies in Athens rebuilt the Stoa of Attalos in the Athenian agora they found it impossible to do fluting without first erecting the columns.

Notes

In overall terms, the architectural work on the Arch of Trajan is much simpler than on the Arch of Titus. More emphasis is given to sculpture and the mouldings are less detailed. In the Flavian period we see much more attention devoted to mouldings (see, for instance, the Temple of Vespasian or Arch of Titus).
