A number of holes for pins are visible as well as inserts which were intended to merge into the coloured surface of the stone.

Sockets for inserts can be seen across this shaft. A number of columns from Portus have signs of repair work.

Notes

This material was recovered from various contexts concentrated around the Fossa Traiana at Portus and is now on display at Ostia. Whether these blocks were part of a stockpile of imports at Portus or a depot of damaged objects is debated but various attempts were made to repair this shaft.
