Notes

This material was recovered from various contexts concentrated around the Fossa Traiana at Portus and is now on display at Ostia. Whether these blocks were part of a stockpile of imports at Portus or a depot of damaged objects is debated but they seem to have undergone only limited work after arrival in Italy. These shafts, of which there are four (though only the top two are visible here) were evidently shipped joined together, presumably to protect them during transit.
